HMS Ships built by the Barnard family
Nelson's fleet was a very effective one for not only was his officers and men hardened by 5 years of war with a high morale. Indeed the quality of the men is essential and this was backed up by a force of thirteen 74-gun ships. Which was perhaps the most efficient that could have been found anywhere. The 74 combined the advantages of speed and gun power as no other ship did. The table below shows that the Barnard family built several important 74 fun ships. Possibly the most successful was the 74-Gun HMS Orion which saw many famous sea battles and was never sunk in any of them.
The 74-gun ship... contains the properties of the First Kate and the frigate. She will not shrink from an encounter with a First Rate, nor abandon the chase of a frigate on account of swiftness. The union of these qualities has therefore, with justice, made the 74-gun ship the principal object of maritime attention, and given her so distinguished a preeminence in our line of battle. (This text is from the times at the time of the Battle of the Nile.)
The building of these 74-gun ships took a lot of trees. The amount of timber required for the construction of these 74-gun ship, is estimated as the product of approximately 3000 fully-grown oak trees.
